Winter in Salzburg

Tips for activities in Salzburg during the Christmas season
Cultural open-air events, the smell of mulled wine and the peaceful hustle and bustle of Salzburg’s Christmas market – winter in the city of Salzburg is a special experience despite the cold temperatures. Treat yourself to a break full of pre-Christmas romance and let yourself be seduced by the magic of the festively decorated old town. To help you make the most of your time in Salzburg, we have put together the highlights of a winter visit.
Salzburg Christmas Market
Right in the heart of the old town, against the impressive backdrop of the cathedral and residence, one of the oldest and most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe awaits you. Over 100 stalls offer everything your heart desires in the run-up to Christmas: handicrafts, classic Christmas decorations, sweet and savory treats as well as hot mulled wine and punch. Particularly atmospheric: the tower blowing on Thursday evening – a real highlight for romantics and music lovers.
Winter baking course: apple strudel & vanilla crescents
Warming, delicious and entertaining: In a traditional baking course, you will learn how to make real Austrian apple strudel – with hand-pulled dough, of course. While the strudel turns golden brown in the oven, you bake classic vanilla crescents and enjoy a hearty goulash soup. An unforgettable experience – especially on cold winter days.
Ice skating on Mozartplatz in the centre of Salzburg
Sporty and picturesque at the same time: from November to the beginning of January, Mozartplatz is transformed into a romantic ice skating rink in the middle of the old town. Surrounded by historic buildings and festive lighting, you glide across the ice in front of the bronze Mozart statue. Ice skates are available to hire – perfect for couples, families and anyone who wants to actively enjoy Salzburg.
